Martin Vossiek was born in Dortmund, Germany, in 1964. He received the Dipl.-Ing. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Ruhr-University, Bochum, in 1991 and 1996. In 1996, he joined the microwave and surface acoustic wave research group of Siemens, Munich, Germany. From 2000 to 2003, he was heading the microwave systems group of Siemens Corporate Technology and was responsible for product developments in the field of commercial microwave sensor and communication systems. In 2003 he moved to Clausthal University of Technology as a professor and was director of the Institute of Electrical Information Technology. Since 2011, he has headed the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics (LHFT) at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). LHFT is a world-leading center for microwave research and scholarship, employing 4 professors, 7 Postdocs and about 50 PhD students as wells as numerous student researchers. From 2019 to 2021, he was the spokesperson of the department of Electrical Engineering (EEI) and vice dean of the Faculty of Engineering at FAU. Since 2022, he is co-speaker of DFG Research Training Group, RTG 2680 „KoRaTo“ (https://www.korato.de/). Martin Vossiek is one of the initiators, and since 2021 spokesman of the DFG Collaborative Research Center, SFB 1483 „EmpkinS“ (https://www.empkins.de).

Mr. Vossiek has been engaged in research and development on microwave theory and techniques, radar systems, local position system, wireless motion capture and localization, imaging and localization algorithms, machine learning and neural network based radar signal processing and wireless sensor systems and sensor networks and RFID. He has authored or co-authored around 350 papers in these areas, and his research has resulted in more than 100 granted patents. The rapid transfer of innovations into applications that advance our daily life is the driving force behind his research. He has been involved in the founding of five high-tech start-up companies.

Martin Vossiek’s research has been recognized by numerous honors and best paper awards. He is a fellow of the IEEE and recipient of the 2019 Microwave Application Award of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for outstanding technical contribution in the field of microwave theory and techniques.

Martin Vossiek is a member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He is a member of the German research foundation (DFG) review board for the subject area 408-02 Communications, High-Frequency and Network Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering, for the period 2020 – 2024. Martin Vossiek is a member of the executive board of the IEEE German MTT/AP Chapter. He was the founding chair and is a member of the IEEE technical committee (TC) MTT-27 “Connected and Autonomous Systems”. He is also a member of the IEEE MTT Technical Committee MTT-29 Microwave Aerospace Systems and the IEEE MTT Technical Committee MTT-24 Microwave/mm-wave Radar, Sensing, and Array Systems. Martin Vossiek is chair of the ICMIM conference executive board within the MTT-S meetings and symposia committee. He is also acting in the German Information Technology Society VDE/ITG in three High-Frequency Technology specialist divisions: HF2 “Radio Communication”, HF3 “Microwave Technology” and HF4 “Localization”. He is the director of the “Institut für Mikrowellen und Antennentechnik e.V. – IMA” (Institute of microwaves and antennas). Mr. Vossiek has served on the organizing and technical program committees of various international conferences and workshops, e.g., he chaired the German Microwave Conference (GeMIC) 2015, the European Radar Conference (EuRAD) in 2017, and the IEEE MTT-S International Conference on Microwaves for Intelligent Mobility (ICMIM) in 2018, and was treasurer of the European Microwave Week (EuMW) in 2023.

From 2013 to 2019, Martin Vossiek was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, serves on the editorial board of the journal FREQUENZ, and he has served on the review boards of technical journals, including IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, IEEE Communications Letters and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems. He has been associate Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Transactions on Radar Systems since October 2022.
